It’s Not What You Know About Online Marketing…

Welcome back! If you like what you see, go ahead and subscribe to my FREE Newsletter to have my blog posts delivered straight to your inbox from now on!

Okay, let’s deal with that title right up front; your success has less to do with what you know when you start out trying to make money online than your shoe size, which doesn’t matter at all.

No, I’m not saying you should know nothing and just “wing it”; far from it. However, a lot of folks seem to get caught up in the idea that they don’t know quite enough yet to make money online.

Bull.

You can spend one evening surfing around the internet and find out everything you need to know to get started. For a lot of that information, your common sense will have already told you what to do.

You’ll notice that the title of this post is incomplete; those three dots at the end seem to indicate there’s more to the sentence. And there is.

It’s not what you know about online marketing, it’s what you do with what you know.

You’ll find inspirational quotes all over the place from Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, such as “Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” When asked what it was like to fail almost a thousand times before succeeding in the invention of the light bulb, he replied “I didn’t fail, I just found over nine hundred ways not to do it.”

He was truly a great inventor, but I know of an arguably even greater inventor. Until recently, few even knew his name.

Nikola Tesla came to America and took his first job…working for Edison in his lab. Before long, they parted ways after it became apparent that Edison and Tesla had different ways of looking at things.

After he left, Tesla was instrumental in the invention of radio; he invented the fluorescent light bulb, AC power, and hundreds of other inventions that are still in use today. In fact, many of Tesla’s inventions have replaced Edison’s in daily usage. Every non-LCD television creates the picture on the tube using a Tesla coil.

Edison died a wealthy, well-respected man. Tesla died penniless and friendless in a hotel room he hadn’t the money to pay for.

What does this have to do with online marketing? Quite a bit, actually.

Both Edison and Tesla were one-of-a-kind geniuses; they both had a level of knowledge that few could come close to. Both men created fantastic inventions, and changed the way we would live forever.

Tesla didn’t market his inventions; in fact, he said more than once that he didn’t care about money at all.

Edison marketed his inventions like a champion; he also spent quite a bit of time and money marketing against Tesla. In fact, Edison invented the electric chair and toured state fairs to show how dangerous Tesla’s AC power was, as opposed to his much “safer” DC power.

Arguably, Tesla was the more intelligent, more knowledgeable and more effective inventor. Edison, however, was the most successful by far.

I’ll say it again…it’s not what you know, it’s what you do with what you know. You can be the most successful person in the room without knowing the most.

So, it’s time to stop thinking about how much you don’t know, and concentrate on what you can accomplish with what you do know.

To Your Infinite Success,

Garrett Miller

PS I understand that there are a lot of people out there who genuinely want to make the most out of what they know with their internet marketing, they just don’t know much at all. For those of you who fall into that category, I strongly suggest checking out Jonathan Budd’s 7 Figure Networker System. Not only is it arguably the most robust marketing system available to the public, but it also contains the online internet marketing course that I used to educate myself on the basics of just about EVERY possible online money-making marketing strategy being used by home-based business owners today. Check it out at www.7FigureSignup.com.

I totally agree Garrett, it’s about application and relationships.

I wonder what could have been if they had stuck together in joint ventures?

Thank you for sharing this perspective about Edison and Tesla.

    For SURE!

It’s the application of information that fields results. If it was ALL about education, there would be line ups a libraries!

Once I learn something I always look at it and then ask myself how can I apply it right now. Keep on rocking Garrett!

I definitely agree with the topic! The basics are everywhere, the information is out there, the trouble for most people is fear of getting into action! Start now! Jump in! There’s a famous quote (that I’ve forgotten the author of at the moment) that says “You dont have to get it right, you just have to get it started.” Jump in, the waters fine and we’re all here to help!

PS: A lot of diehard fans of Tesla really loathe Edison for what many consider to be theft. Edison made much of his fortune not by what he invented but by what he got to CLAIM he invented because of who he hired. Leveraging others works is powerful stuff.

    Hi Garret,

Definitely the biggest key to success is PERSISTENCE. It’s the willingness to apply immediately what you learned from others and constantly create more value inside. Loved your comparison with Thomas Edison. Always great to visit your blog!

Once again, you hit it right on the spot Garrett. The reason why so many people hoard information, is because it is very easy, and fun. It makes people feel smart.

Where as practical application, lowers the self-worth of the marketer. Bad results = Drop in confidence. That is why, as Vitally says, PERSISTENCE is the biggest key to success. I completely agree!

Thanks again for the great post,

    Hi Garrett,

You make a very good point..you do not have to be the most knowledgeable, the best or the brightest to be successful. You simply must be an action taker.

I see a lot of people in this industry take course after course but are never “ready” to get out there and make it happen or drop off after a few months of “marketing”.

As an entrepreneur you cannot be afraid to put yourself out there, even when first getting started. Training without action leads to nothing. Action without training leads to frustration. Find the balance for success!
