How Were You Purple Today?

Hi there! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my FREE Newsletter to be sure you're in the loop. Thanks for visiting!

Life can be difficult for home-based business owners when first beginning their quest to make money online. Information overload, overwhelming to-do lists and a lack of a firm concept for their own personal brand are just a few of the things that can cause runners to drop out of the race before they even get to finish their first lap.

“Traditional” entrepreneurs must rise to overcome challenges and be the leaders their companies need them to be to succeed. Social entrepreneurs must combine their entrepreneurial wit with a strong sense of purpose for their cause. Home-based entrepreneurs though, especially in this age of Web 2.0 & social media, face a unique set of challenges. With no support staff, sometimes even no support, period, home business owners must create their own optimism each and every day, ready to tackle whatever obstacles they might have thrown at them with a smile on their faces. Not only that, but they and they alone must figure out how to juggle developing their brand, relationships and paycheck all at the same time… no small feat!

Today, I wanted to share with you all a book (and an idea within that book) that really changed my life. You may think I’m exaggerating right now; I mean how many marketing books out there really change people’s lives? Well, the book changed my attitude, my attitude changed my approach, my approach changed my paycheck and all of these things together changed my life, so sit tight, LISTEN UP and watch this video…

.

…and there you go! Hope you guys enjoyed that! Anyone interested in checking out Purple Cow by Seth Godin can get it on Amazon for cheap here:

So, how bout it guys… Any input on the books? How were you purple today? How about your marketing? Your personal brand? Get back to me on this one; I’d love to hear from you!

Thank you for spending your time here today. I truly appreciate you, and I hope this post got you thinking!

Network Marketing vs Internet Marketing vs Attraction Marketing: Rumble in the Home-Based Business Jungle

The other day, I was forced to realize something downright SHOCKING… MOST people out there really don’t have a clue about MLM, much less internet marketing, and even still less attraction marketing! So, I did what needed to be done, hit my trusty whiteboard and banged out a venn-diagram…

I wanted to showcase the advantages ANYONE can secure for themselves when they combine a solid code of ethics with up-to-date strategies and killer work ethic (over time) in each of these fields, so that people interested may be able to better evaluate for themselves which route they’d be interested in taking if they were already seeking a route to take, or at the very least educate themselves about what it is that I’ve chosen to do with my life so I don’t have to explain what MLM is to a facebook friend ever again, lol. ; )

Now without further delay, I give you my presentation on the merits of traditional Network Marketing, traditional Internet Marketing and the advantages gained by combining the two in Attraction Marketing (Web 2.0):

Like I said in the video, there are some people I would like to thank for helping me to make it this far:

  • Mr. Jonathan Budd, Jedi, Leader, Mentor – Your one masterfully calculated Adwords ad however many months ago caused my life to spiral off onto a path that has been nothing short of awesome. The training you’ve provided me with has been invaluable to my development as both a marketer and a person. You taught me a lot of what I know about true leadership and the limitless abundance of the Universe! Thanks bro!
  • Ms. Katie Freiling, Social Media/Blogging Queen – Thanks Katie for your baller trainings on social media & blogging! It was your training + social media blueprint that really helped me understand what it was that I needed to do online to ensure my success. Thanks again!
  • Mr. Mark Hoverson, Ferny Ceballos & Mike Dillard – Your trainings were also crucial to me during my “internet marketing infancy.” Thanks guys!
  • Mr. Jim Gregory – We’re takin’ over, bro. Period.
  • Mr. Ryan Yokome – An all-around nice guy (he’s Canadian eh?), Ryan is a textbook example of a winner plain and simple. Check this guy out before he gets too famous to be bothered, or before he NLPs the world into submission, whichever comes first… lol! Thanks Ryan, the banner’s workin’ out great!
  • Ms. Rachel Jackson, YouTube Celebrity – Had to drop a mention for Rachel here… She GETS YouTube and will help you get it too. ‘Nuff said, thanks Rachel!
  • Ms. Debbie Turner, Tribe Leader – Debbie has been my guiding light since I’ve been online… If online marketing can yield parent-child-esque mentoring relationships, Debbie’s definitely my e-mom lol… But seriously! Thanks for everything Debbie, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
  • Last month’s tribin’ buddies Mr. Fredric Schwartz, Daryl Whicker, Aaron Wyssmann and Scott Phares – Dude, you guys like doubled the traffic my blog had seen on our first Tribe Tuesday, and it’s been climbing ever since… You’re all awesome! Thanks guys!
  • And last but certainly not least, you, my readers! I can’t imagine why I’d be blogging right now if it wasn’t for you all, and I really, truly appreciate each of you! Thanks for your continued support!

So… what did you guys think? Learn anything? I’d love to hear from you… This was my first “real” YouTube video, and there’s definitely some things I plan to improve on… I’d love to hear any feedback or constructive criticism!

Thank you for investing your time here today, and every other day. As I said above I do this for you guys, my readers! Hope you got some value out of today’s post; I love you all!

To Your Infinite Success,

Garrett Miller

Twitter – Autoresponder (Web) 2.0

Twitter can be a great help with your online marketing, but only if you use it right. Before we talk about how to use Twitter to its greatest effect, let’s talk about what Twitter is not.

Twitter is not…

  • A traffic slot-machine.
  • A place for spam.
  • Useful at all if you don’t understand it.

Some people seem to think that Twitter is some magical solution to marketing, making it easier than ever to get their message in front of thousands of rabid, ready-to-buy viewers. To this group, all that counts is how many followers you have…the more, the better!…and then you send them affiliate link after product launch after upsell offer until you’re stuffing your mattress with hundred dollar bills.

None of that means a thing if you want to actually help your marketing efforts with Twitter.

Don’t approach Twitter as a confusing, hard-to-understand method to connect with your audience. Think of it as Autoresponder 2.0.

If you’ve been around online marketing for very long at all, you’ve already heard “The money’s in the list” a million times; that’s because it’s a fact. A targeted list of email subscribers is one of the most effective ways to generate money from your online marketing efforts.

No one that understands email marketing would ever tell you “It doesn’t matter if your subscriber list is targeted to your niche; the more the better!”. A small targeted list of 100 subscribers can be much more valuable than an untargeted list of 10,000.

Twitter is no different.

If you spend your time building your follower count to astronomical numbers, the most important thing about that group is still how targeted it is. If you have a list of 1,000 followers who found your Twitter feed from your signature link on the Hello Kitty Online forums, your “Make More Money Online NOW!” tweet isn’t going to bring you the traffic you want.

It’s quality, not quantity, in both email lists and Twitter followers.

Likewise, for your marketing messages to reach an effective audience, you have to provide quality content first. When setting up an autoresponder series, you want to send your list valuable information more often than you send them a call to action. Twitter is no different. If someone follows you, and all they get is ten affiliate links each day, they’ll unfollow you in a hurry, or just ignore you completely.

Don’t fall into the trap of “more is better” when it comes to Twitter; you wouldn’t build an email subscriber list full of random, untargeted people and expect it to do well for you. When using Twitter, follow the same rules that you would for building an autoresponder subscriber list; build a targeted list of followers, provide them valuable content on a regular basis… If you’re unfamiliar with the next steps I suggest you pick up Magnetic Sponsoring (www.MakeMeMagnetic.com) now and thank me later. Haha, seriously though…

When used correctly, Twitter can be your best friend. When used incorrectly, it can net you a worst enemy (or at least get you an un-follow real quick). So live long and tweet smart my friends…

To Your EPIC Successes (and Web 2.0),

Garrett Miller

It’s Not What You Know About Online Marketing…

Okay, let’s deal with that title right up front; your success has less to do with what you know when you start out trying to make money online than your shoe size, which doesn’t matter at all.

No, I’m not saying you should know nothing and just “wing it”; far from it. However, a lot of folks seem to get caught up in the idea that they don’t know quite enough yet to make money online.

Bull.

You can spend one evening surfing around the internet and find out everything you need to know to get started. For a lot of that information, your common sense will have already told you what to do.

You’ll notice that the title of this post is incomplete; those three dots at the end seem to indicate there’s more to the sentence. And there is.

It’s not what you know about online marketing, it’s what you do with what you know.

You’ll find inspirational quotes all over the place from Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, such as “Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” When asked what it was like to fail almost a thousand times before succeeding in the invention of the light bulb, he replied “I didn’t fail, I just found over nine hundred ways not to do it.”

He was truly a great inventor, but I know of an arguably even greater inventor. Until recently, few even knew his name.

Nikola Tesla came to America and took his first job…working for Edison in his lab. Before long, they parted ways after it became apparent that Edison and Tesla had different ways of looking at things.

After he left, Tesla was instrumental in the invention of radio; he invented the fluorescent light bulb, AC power, and hundreds of other inventions that are still in use today. In fact, many of Tesla’s inventions have replaced Edison’s in daily useage. Every non-LCD television creates the picture on the tube using a Tesla coil.

Edison died a wealthy, well-respected man. Tesla died penniless and friendless in a hotel room he hadn’t the money to pay for.

What does this have to do with online marketing? Quite a bit, actually.

Both Edison and Tesla were one-of-a-kind geniuses; they both had a level of knowledge that few could come close to. Both men created fantastic inventions, and changed the way we would live forever.

Tesla didn’t market his inventions; in fact, he said more than once that he didn’t care about money at all.

Edison marketed his inventions like a champion; he also spent quite a bit of time and money marketing against Tesla. In fact, Edison invented the electric chair and toured state fairs to show how dangerous Tesla’s AC power was, as opposed to his much “safer” DC power.

Arguably, Tesla was the more intelligent, more knowledgeable and more effective inventor. Edison, however, was the most successful by far.

I’ll say it again…it’s not what you know, it’s what you do with what you know. You can be the most successful person in the room without knowing the most.

So, it’s time to start thinking about how much you don’t know, and concentrate on what you can accomplish with what you do know.

To Your Infinite Success,

Garrett Miller

PS I understand that there are a lot of people out there who genuinely want to make the most out of what they know with their internet marketing, they just don’t know much at all. For those of you who fall into that category, I strongly suggest checking out Jonathan Budd’s 7 Figure Networker System. Comic Books, Donald Trump and You!

Choosing a role model while starting your internet marketing business can be a big help. While some people would say to pick a successful person to inspire you (which can be a good idea), I have some fictional people in mind who have something to teach about getting the right mindset to be an entrepreneur.

You should be more like Green Lantern and Daredevil.

If you aren’t familiar with these two comic book characters, Green Lantern is basically a “space cop” with a magic ring, while Daredevil is a blind lawyer with “super-senses”. However, that’s not what I want to look at about these two characters.

They are both known as men without fear.

I know…what does this have to do with online marketing? How are comic books going to help me develop a strong entrepreneurial mindset? That’s simple…to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to act past your fear.

Every successful businessperson has fear. It’s only natural. After all, taking chances and risks is what building a successful business is all about. “Playing it safe” is a tool not often used in a true entrepreneur’s toolbox.

“But, I’m nervous or scared all the time! I can’t do this!” Of course you think this kind of thing at times. Most (if not all) successful businesspeople could say the same thing; developing the proper mindset for your online marketing isn’t about if you have fear, but how you let that fear affect you.

For some, their reaction to being afraid is to get excited and charge forward. For most, the usual reaction is to freeze, hesitate or just flat-out run. This is known as the “fight-or-flight” response, and it’s as old as the human race.

If your usual reaction is “flight,” you need to take a good look at what is frightening you.

In most cases, an easy way to deal with your fear is to say “If I do this, what’s the absolute worst that can happen?” Believe it or not, most of the time you’ll realize that total failure isn’t that bad. It’s not what you’re aiming for, but guess what? If you’re not willing to fail, you’re not willing to succeed.

Read that sentence again. “If you’re not willing to fail, you’re not willing to succeed.” When someone is a huge success, it’s easy to forget how many times they failed completely before they achieved their goals.

Donald Trump has filed for bankruptcy twice, and yet his current net worth is estimated at $2.9 billion dollars. Twice in his life (once in 1990, and again in 1994), “The Donald” has gone from being a billionaire to entering bankruptcy protection…and then back to being a billionaire again.

That last part is the most important part…in Trump’s mind, losing billions of dollars of valuation wasn’t the end of the road, it was just a setback. And now, the shocking part…Donald Trump gets scared sometimes. But instead of thinking “Wow, I went from all to nothing; I’ll never do that again,” he reacted to both setbacks with an attitude of “Wow, I went from all to nothing; I did it once, I can do it again.”

Giving in to normal fears is perfectly natural, but that doesn’t mean you should do it. When something scares you or makes you nervous, ask yourself “Why does that bother me…what’s the worst that can happen, and how could I overcome it?”

Learn to say “I can overcome it,” and you’re already developing a true entrepreneurial mindset.

To our epic successes (and our minor setbacks on the way),

Garrett Miller

Effective SEO Isn’t As Hard As You Think It Is

One of the keys to being effective with online marketing is SEO, or Search Engine Optimization.

You’ve probably read that sentence (or one just like it) over and over if you’ve been researching how to make money online…in fact, you’ve probably heard it enough to be sick of it by now. But there’s a really good reason why you hear that repeatedly… it’s true.

Stop groaning. Effective SEO doesn’t have to be a full-time tedious job; there are some simple things you can do to help boost your position when doing your internet search engine marketing.

Search engines can’t read Javascript or Flash

Sure, it looks nice, but looks alone won’t get you anywhere. There are some beautiful websites that don’t make a dime, while some of the ugliest pages on the internet convert traffic into money at a fantastic rate. If you have to use Javascript for your site navigation, you need to make sure you have text links to your website’s pages as well so that the search engine spiders will pick up your internal link structure.

Don’t freak out about PR (Page Rank)

Yes, you want to build as many high PR backlinks to your site as you can, but PR is only a small part of the behind-the-scenes math used by Google to determine your site’s search engine placement. Likewise, don’t think the PR of your site determines how well it will be placed; it helps, but it’s not the be-all and end-all of organic traffic.

Title tags are your friend

Make sure you use <title> tags for every page on your site, and make sure they’re focused on a keyword phrase. There are WordPress plug-ins that make this easy for bloggers, I use All in One SEO and it’s great.

“The forgotten tag”

There are lots of websites that don’t use the <alt> tag on their images; this is a mistake, as you’re missing a great opportunity to get your keyword phrases in front of the search engines again. These tags determine what shows up when you mouse over an image; make sure these are centered around keyword phrases you’re trying to rank for.

Be all-natural with your content

More and more, search engines want “natural” content. What this means is that you shouldn’t be stuffing your keywords into every sentence on your website. You’ve heard about keyword density; what you may not know is that having too many keywords in your content can actually hurt you. Make sure your keyword is in your content once or twice, but only in a natural way.

Backlinks: Quality, quality, QUALITY!

While it’s always good to have as many backlinks as you can get, the quality of those backlinks counts for more with SEO than how many you have. If your website is about “purple monkey spiders,” then a link to you from a website about zebras won’t count for as much to the search engines as a link from a “monkey spider” site. The best backlink to have is from another “purple monkey spider” site; one backlink from another site in your niche does more to build your authority with the search engines than a dozen backlinks from websites that have nothing to do with your niche. How to get those backlinks?

Give a little, get a lot

The best way to get quality backlinks is to help others in your niche build their site. Leave good, helpful comments on blogs in your niche. Find forums related to your niche and participate. Give other sites in your niche backlinks from your site. This will do two things; it will build backlinks to your site on the sites and forums you participate on, and it will build your credibility and authority on your niche.

Remember, one thing that affects your position on the search engines that most people don’t think about…your reputation. If you build a reputation as knowledgeable, helpful and informative in your niche, people will recognize it. Before you know it, you’ll be getting backlinks to your website from places you’ve never heard of, because you’ll be considered an authority on the subject.

Word of mouth can be one of the most valuable SEO tool at your disposal.

Now, go forth and optimize!

To Your Infinite Success,

Garrett Miller

PS I’d love it if you guys showed me some retweet love and let me know if you found value in this post, there are some people out there with some veeerrrry ugly sites in dire need of help (as far as Google is concerned)! Thanks!

Online Marketing has no “Friends & Family” Plan

Taking the step to truly commit to your online marketing business can be a real challenge, and it can be a million times harder when you feel like it’s you against the world. And quite often, that’s how you feel after telling your friends and family what you’re doing.

Unless Steve Jobs is your uncle, they’re not going to “get it”. When you say “I’m starting an online business,” you’ll usually get one of several different reactions:

  • “You know all that stuff is a rip-off, right?”
  • “A friend of mine tried that once; he’s broke now.”
  • “You’ve got to be pretty smart to make that work; are you sure?”

And the all-time classic

  • “That won’t work; I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

It happens to everyone. Your friends think you’re hacking into banks, scamming people into sending money to a Nigerian prince, or for those of us lucky enough to be involved in network marketing, “getting sucked into an evil PYYYRAMIIDDD ” (Ooh.. goosebumps, lol). Well, guess what? It doesn’t matter what you do, you’ll never convince them that what you’re doing is on the “up and up”, so don’t bother. When it comes to talking to your friends and family about your online marketing, there’s one good piece of advice I can give you:

Don’t try.

In fact, don’t even tell them what you’re doing if you don’t have to.

It’s only natural to try to get validation for the decision you’ve made. But that generally won’t work in our case. If you try to bring up your online marketing to friends and family before you start seeing results, you’ll be met with reason after reason why you can’t do it, and unfortunately it can be hard not to listen. At the very least, it WILL subconsciously affect your belief that you can succeed.

What you have to realize is that quite a few of those people would have the same reaction if you were opening what they would refer to as a “real” business. In both cases, it’s not so much a reaction to whether or not they think you can do it…it’s that they think they couldn’t. And in the case of online business, not only do they not think its possible, they don’t even understand it.

One of the most important parts of being successful online is your attitude, and your belief that you will succeed. Notice I didn’t say “belief that you can succeed”, but “belief that you will succeed”.

If you truly believe that you will succeed, then guess what? You will. With that belief powering you, any setbacks or obstacles will stop looking like the end of the road and more like “just another thing to deal with”. People deal with setbacks and obstacles on a daily basis in other careers; the difference is, if you have a problem at your nine-to-five job in your cubicle, you won’t have a crowd of friends, family and acquaintances standing ready to say “See? It’s not going to work; you should just quit.”

The reason why is that there are few people that view making money online as a business. That viewpoint is the reason there aren’t more people who are successful online. The same people who will “stick it out” in a dead-end job with a brick and mortar business wouldn’t dream of starting their own business…of any kind, much less online.

It can be done; heck, it is done on a daily basis by thousands of people all over the world. And, just to be honest, some of them are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, yet they still earn a good living with online marketing.

If they can, you can…and will, but only if you don’t spend your valuable time dwelling on the reasons why you can’t.

You can…you will…keep that foremost in your mind, and before you know it you’ll be able to add “you did” to the list.

The sky’s the limit,

Garrett Miller

Why I Daydream, and Why You Should Too!

What if I were to tell you that right now you could be anywhere you wish, surrounded by anything you desire while being anyone you’d like to be… all without leaving your seat? You’d probably think I was crazy, right? Well I may or may not be crazy, but as far as your subconscious mind is concerned, I’m right! BWAAAAH? How can this be? Don’t worry… Garrett’s got answers. ; )

Most people don’t stop to think about it, but every single achievement achieved, invention invented and even every advancement advanced by the human race was the direct result of an accompanying daydream. Need proof? We’re no longer living in cold, damp caves eating berries and raw meat. Clocks, rockets, TV, cell phones, heck even kitchen utensils were all brought into existence because someone, somewhere dreamed ‘em up. All of these achievements weren’t the product of wild, aimless daydreams though… They were brought about by daydreaming’s more productive, less talked-about side; Visualization.

Whether you realize it or not, your mind uses visualization every day. Whether you’re making a sandwich or running an ultra-marathon, your mind subconsciously visualizes the expected result. Note how I say “expected” rather than “desired”… This is a crucial element of understanding the power of visualization. By moving your visualizations out of your subconscious mind and acknowledging them, you take control of them. Once you do this, anything is possible.

Now, I’m sure the question on everybody’s mind is “Seriously, Garrett, it’s great that I can daydream my way onto a yacht floating around the Pacific surrounded by beautiful women (or men) feeding me grapes and all that, but how can I bring this into reality?” The answer to this question is simple… I don’t know! In fact, no one really knows. Much like electricity, the Law of Attraction simply exists.

The Law of Attraction, like the Universe, really trips me out sometimes. It just IS. There is no beginning and no end, no real explanation. Some people suggest that by focusing on (visualizing) certain things, the human brain is more receptive to those things and will in turn fire subconscious signals to keep you headed in their direction. Others believe that the immeasurable power of human thought actually affects the Universe in such a way that it attracts the content of your thoughts towards your life, thus giving you more opportunities to seize them. Either way, “like attracts like,” meaning that your thoughts (visualizations) WILL greatly aid you in your pursuit of success/wealth/freedom by working to establish congruency between what’s going on in your head and what’s going on around you. In addition, they will motivate you like you’ve never been motivated before when done properly.

Now onto the good stuff, HOW to visualize effectively. Good visualization can essentially be broken down into 4 steps:

  1. Find yourself a dark, isolated place that will be free of ALL distractions (cell phone on silent, log off your social media sites…), a place that you will be able to reeeaallly relax in. I like my bedroom; my tempurpedic is my favorite place to “blast off” into Imaginationland from.
  2. Consider what you would like your life to be like. Go deeper than the things you’d like to have around you, deeper than the people you’d like to be involved with and really try to figure out what you would like for your “end result” – what I sometimes call your desired “beautiful reality,” this is basically all of your life goals summed up into one epic thought… The significance of this can’t be summed up in words, so you may have to take some time out and really ponder what this means for yourself. Take all things into account: WHO you are (the qualities you represent, what you’ve achieved, etc), WHERE you are (on your yacht, in your car, in the garden of your dream home), WHAT you’re doing (at that moment and with your life)… The beauty of this is that there’s no wrong way to do it once you get going, just be sure to enjoy yourself.
  3. Now, close your eyes, take a deep breath and just GO! Actually BE where you want to be. Look around, and take notice of the details. If you’re in your Bentley Coupe, who’s there with you? What are you guys talking about? How does the roar of the engine sound as you push it past 100 mph? What’s in the dash, oak or walnut? The money’s in the details. As you begin to really feel the experience you’re conjuring up, consider how you FEEL for having achieved so much. Are you happy? Proud? Tranquil? Overwhelmingly fulfilled? As you’re first starting out with visualization, this can be difficult. Just remember, visualization, much like everything else, is a learnable skill that you will improve on with practice.
  4. Speaking of practice, #4 is the most important, so listen up! The key to successful visualization, and thus the key to unlocking the resulting motivation/achievements it will yield, is consistency! I do my visualizations at least twice every day, right when I get up (to pump me up for the day) and right before I go to sleep (on the nights I dream, I have the best dreams right after a good visualization sesh), with assorted mini-ones throughout the day, usually just before sitting down to do something important.  By being consistent, you will not only get better at visualization, but you’ll be able to experience more of your desired “beautiful reality” as it continues to grow and develop. Some days I’m relaxing on my yacht, other days I’m hanging out on my balcony, other days traveling to exotic locales, occasionally even giving the keynote speech at a fundraising benefit I’m putting on… when I need the motivation to get a really heavy task finished I use that one; I literally can’t imagine a better mood than the one it puts me in… try it for yourself! The beauty of visualization, and also life, is that truly anything is possible!

It should also be noted that some people use “visualization boards” to help them get their imaginations going. I’m a dreamer by nature so I never stopped to put one together, but from what I’ve heard they can serve as a good place for your imagination to take flight from, like a helipad for your imagination! To make one, simply get a piece of posterboard/cardboard/paper (or use a notebook) of whatever size and print out/paste or draw images of what you’d like to have in your life. Symbols can be used for things that can’t be touched (aka the best things) like success, true love, freedom, whatever you want in your “beautiful reality“… go for it!

I hope this helped some of you out there who may have been stuck in a rut or just not moving your life in the direction you’d like it to. It may seem silly to take time out of your day to daydream, but believe me, the power of visualization is not to be underestimated! Einstein once saidImagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions,” and Einstein knew what was up! Now, go forth and imagine!

To creating your best decade EVER,

Garrett Miller
